VAC is the Hindu Goddess of speech. She is described in the Rig Veda as not only speech itself, but also as truth and perception, which allow us to turn divine knowledge into words. She is said to be the mother of the Vedas, having inspired sages to write them. Vac is depicted either as a golden-skinned woman or as a cow, a symbol of nourishment. She was eventually syncretized with the Goddess Sarasvati, ruler of knowledge. Vac's name, which means "speech," is also seen as VAK or VACH, and sacred texts give her the following names (some of which she shares with other Hindu Goddesses):

Anat The Great Goddess Of The Ancient Levant Image
ANAT IS THE ANCIENT CANAANITE GODDESS OF LOVE AND WAR...THE MAIDEN WHO LOVES BATTLE, THE VIRGIN GODDESS OF SACRIFICE WHO, LIKE THE GREAT HINDU GODDESS, KALI, SUSPENDS HANGS SEVERED HEADS ABOUT HER PERSON. HER NAME MEANS "TO ANSWER" AND "STRENGTH OF LIFE". IN ART, SHE IS OFTEN DEPICTED AS A YOUNG WOMAN WEARING A HELMET AND ARMED IN A SHIELD, BATTLE AX, AND A SPEAR. SHE WAS BELIEVED TO BE THE DAUGHTER OF EL, THE RULER OF THE COSMOS...AND THE SISTER AND CONSORT OF BA'AL, THE GOD OF STORMS AND RAIN. THE CUNIFORM TEXTS DESCRIBE HER AS A RUTHLESS AND AGGRESS GODDESS WHO DESTROYS ALL THE ENEMIES OF BA'AL. INDEED, SHE WAS AN AGGRESSIVE ADVOCATE FOR HIM, AND ON HIS BEHALF, SHE RUTHLESSLY DESTROYED THE GOD OF DROUGHT, STERILITY, AND DEATH...MOT. IT HAS ALSO BEEN SAID THAT SHE THREATENED HER OWN FATHER ON BA'AL'S BEHALF.

ANAT WAS NOT TRULY A VIRGIN IN THE WAY WE INTERPRET THE WORD. RATHER, IN THOSE DAYS, A VIRGIN WAS A YOUNG, MARRIAGEABLE WOMAN WHO HAD YET TO BEAR A CHILD. IN FACT, SHE ACTUALLY HAD A FIERCE APPETITE FOR SEX AND BLOOD; HER FOLLOWERS PETITIONED HER FOR BOTH WAR AND FERTILITY. AND, AS THE GODDESS OF SEXUALITY, ANAT WAS CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OF ALL THE DEITY; AS A FERTILITY GODDESS, SHE PROTECTED THE PEOPLE, ANIMALS AND CROPS.

IT WAS IN EGYPT'S LATE BRONZE AGE, WHEN SHE BECAME AND EGYPTION WAR GODDESS, THAT SHE ATTAINED HER GREATEST STATUS. THE EGYPTIANS REGARDED HER AS THE DAUGHTER OF RA AND THE WIFE OF SET. RAMESES II ADOPTED HER AS HIS OWN PERSONAL GUARDIAN WHEN HE WENT INTO BATTLE, AND AFTER HE RESTORED TANIS, HE EXPANDED HER SHRINE.

ANAT IS CELEBRATED IN THE SPRING AND AT HARVEST FESTIVALS. IN TIME, MANY OF HER MYTHS AND ATTRIBUTES WERE ASSIMILATED INTO THE GODDESSES ASHERAH AND ASTARTE.

"EMPOWERMENT"

"I AM LOVE; I AM LOVER."I AM FREEDOM; I AM FREE."I AM PART OF THE BEAUTY"THAT LIVES ALL AROUND ME."MY FEET ARE FIRM UPON THE EARTH."MY HANDS RISE TOWARD THE SUN."I AM STRONG IN MY POWER"AND WITH ALL I AM ONE."
