Macuilxochitl

Macuilxochitl Image
In Aztec mythology, Xochipilli was the god of love, games, beauty, dance, flowers, maize, and song. His name contains the Nahuatl words xochitl ("flower") and pilli (either "prince" or "child"), and hence means "flower prince". He is also referred to as Macuilxochitl, which means "five flowers".

His wife was Mayahuel and his twin sister was Xochiquetzal. As one of the gods responsible for fertility and agricultural produce, he was associated with Tlaloc, god of rains, and Cinteotl, god of maize. In the mid-1800s, a 16th-century Aztec statue of Xochipilli was unearthed on the side of the volcano Popocatepetl near Tlamanalco. The statue is of a single figure seated upon a temple-like base. Both the statue and the base upon which it sits are covered in carvings of sacred and psychoactive plants including mushrooms (Psilocybe aztecorum), tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), morning glory (Turbina corymbosa), sinicuichi (Heimia salicifolia), possibly cacahuaxochitl (Quararibea funebris), and one unidentified flower. The figure himself sits crosslegged on the base, head tilted up, eyes open, jaw tensed, with his mouth half open. The statue is currently housed in the Museo Nacional de Antropologia in Mexico City.

It has been suggested by Wasson, Schultes, and Hofmann that Xochipilli represents a figure in the throes of entheogenic ecstasy. The position and expression of the body, in combination with the very clear representations of hallucinogenic plants which are known to have been used in sacred contexts by the Aztec support this interpretation.

Wasson says in The Wondrous Mushroom of the statue of Xochipilli:"He is absorbed in temicxoch, 'the flowery dream', as the Nahua say in describing the awesome experience that follows the ingestion of an entheogen. I can think of nothing like it in the long and rich history of European art: Xochipilli absorbed in temicxoch."

Goddess Gbenebeka Image
GBENEBEKA is the Ogoni Goddess of motherhood. This Nigerian tribe say that Gbenebeka came down from the sky and created their people. She sometimes appears to men, and if they are kind to her she will stay with them for awhile. One day, she will vanish, moving on to another deserving man. A shrine to Gbenebeka was burned down by the British in 1914 as a response to an Ogoni uprising. Her name means "great mother."

Goddess Hiiaka

Goddess Hiiaka Image
HI'IAKA is the Hawaiian Goddess of the islands and nature. She is the sister of Pele, Goddess of fire and volcanoes. Although Hi'iaka was conceived as an egg in Tahiti, Pele's original home, she was born in Hawaii after being carried there by Pele. She is therefore sometimes called HI'IAKA-I-KA-POLI-O-PELE, which means "cradled in the bosom of Pele".

Hi'iaka loved her sister Pele, despite her temper tantrums. Only one incident marred their relationship. Pele had seduced a young chief named Lohiau who lived in Kauai. After returning to her home at Kilauea, Pele wished to have the chief come live with her, and she asked Hi'iaka to go and bring him to her. She warned Hi'iaka not to fall in love with Lohi'au, and to return within 40 days. Hi'iaka asked Pele to watch over her gardens and her friend, Hopoe, who lived there.

Hi'iaka's journey to Kauai was long and dangerous. When she finally arrived, she found that the young chief had died from heartache, thinking that Pele would not return for him. Hi'iaka used her magic to bring Lohi'au back to life, and returned with him to Pele. Unfortunately, she had been gone for more than 40 days, and Pele had grown jealous and angry. She burned down Hi'iaka's gardens, with Hopoe trapped inside.

Hi'iaka was devastated by the loss of her friend and so mad at Pele that she turned to Lohi'au and kissed him. This made Pele even angrier, and she sent waves of lava to kill them. Hi'iaka was not harmed, but Lohi'au died, again. Hi'iaka, realizing that she loved him, went to the underworld and brought him back to life for the second time. The two then returned to Kauai, out of Pele's reach, and lived out their lives together.

Common Germanic Deities Image

One of the Wodin chorus chanting Spam in the caf'e

In the original 1887 poem, Wednesday's child is loving and giving.

Wednesday - the name comes from the Middle English Wednes dei, which is from Old English Wednes daeg, meaning the day of the Germanic god Woden (Wodan) who was a god of the Anglo-Saxons in England until about the 7th century.

Wednes daeg is like the Old Norse Odinsdagr ("Odin's day"), which is an early translation of the Latin dies Mercurii ("Mercury's day"). Though Mercury (the messenger of the gods) and Woden (the king of the Germanic gods) are not equivalent in most regards.

Russian does not use pagan names but instead uses sred'a, meaning "middle," similar to the German Mittwoch. Portuguese uses the word quarta-feira, meaning "fourth day."

Hope that clears that up. There's not much of the day left.

Anemones Wind Flower

Anemones Wind Flower Image
THE NAME "WIND FLOWER" IS OFTEN GIVEN THIS BEAUTIFUL LITTLE PLANT BECAUSE MANY OF THE SPECIES INHABIT WINDY PLACES. IN FACT, THE WORD ANEMONE COMES FROM THE GREEK, "ANEMOS", WHICH MEANS "WIND" THIS FLOWER ORIGINALLY CAME FROM THE COUNTRIES ALONG THE EAST COAST OF THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA. IN MYTHOLOGY THE "ANEMONE" WAS DEDICATED TO "APHRODITE "OR "VENUS", AND AN EVEN MORE FAMOUS LEGEND CONNECTS THE "ANEMONE" WITH THE LOVE STORY OF "APHRODITE" AND "ADONIS. "

THE "ANEMONE" IS SAID TO BE DERIVED FROM THE YOUNG MORTAL, "ADONIS", WHO WAS FAMED FOR HIS BEAUTY, AND WHO WAS A REIGNING FAVORITE OF "APHRODITE", THE GODDESS OF LOVE. HE WAS KILLED WHILE HUNTING, AND CHANGED BY "APHRODITE" INTO THE "ANEMONE". ACCORDING TO THIS MYTH, THERE WAS ONCE A GOLDEN-HAIRED BOY, ADONIS, WHO APHRODITE LOVED MORE THAN ANYTHING. AND, WHEN ADONIS LIVED WITH APHRODITE,THE TWO LOVERS WOULD GO HUNTING IN THE WOODS. AS ADONIS CHASED GAME THROUGH THE FOREST, THE GODDESS WOULD ALMOST ALWAYS BE FOLLOWING CLOSELY BEHIND, IN HER SWAN DRIVEN CHARIOT, DRESSED AS A HUNTRESS.

BUT THE LOVES OF THESE GODS AND GODDESSES SEEMED ALWAYS TO BE FATED SO WE CAN BE ASSURED THAT SOMETHING VERY SAD WAS TO HAPPEN. AND SO THE BEAUTIFUL ADONIS ONE DAY, WHILE HUNTING, CAME TO A MOST TERRIBLE DEATH. IT SEEMS THAT APHRODITE'S EX-LOVER, ARES, THE GOD OF WAR, HAD GROWN JEALOUS OF HER AFFAIR WITH THE MORTAL, SO, ONE DAY WHILE ADONIS WAS HUNTING ALONE, ARES DISGUISED HIMSELF AS A BOAR AND ATTACKED ADONIS, CAUSING HIM LETHAL INJURIES. APHRODITE HURRIED TO ADONIS IN HER CHARIOT, BUT HIS SOUL HAD ALREADY DESCENDED INTO THE UNDERWORLD.

IN DESPAIR, APHRODITE THREW HERSELF UPON A BANK IN THE GROVE WHERE THE ADONIS HAD BEEN SO CRUELLY SLAIN, SHE WEPT BITTER, BITTER, TEARS. BUT EVEN HER TEARS WERE IMMORTAL, AND WHEREVER THEY FELL, THERE SPRANG UP A DELICATE LITTLE CRIMSON FLOWERTHE ANEMONE. AND IT IS SAID THAT IN THE FLOWER, ADONIS LIVES AGAIN AS THE SPIRIT OF THE WIND.

Soft stealing from beneath the snow,
I saw a pretty wind flower blow;
Fair were its petals, streaked with red,
Like sunset on a snowflake shed. "How dar'st thou, gentle flower, to brave This early spring,- far better save
Thy fairy bloom, to grace the day
When wind and storm have passed away! My humble gifts would be no boon Among the myriad flowers of June;
Now when the earth is brown and bare,
One little spot I make more fair. "I LOVE AMONG THESE LINGERING SNOWS
TO STAND, THE HERALD OF THE ROSE;

FOR SADDEST EYES GROW BRIGHT TO SEE

THE PROPHET-FLOWER, ANEMONE.

Goddess Dziparu Mate

Goddess Dziparu Mate Image
DZIPARU MATE is the Latvian Goddess of yarn. Knitting was very important in the life of young Latvian women. Girls were expected to knit over fifty pairs of mittens before their wedding day, and the number of pairs a girl had made was one factor in finding a husband. On the wedding day, the bride would give out the mittens she had made to her in-laws. Dziparu Mate was called upon by these young knitters to watch over their yarn and make sure that it had no tangles. Also seen as DZIPARINA MAMULINA, her name means "yarn mother"--she is one of the many Latvian mother Goddesses or Mates.

Hebe The Good Goddess Image
IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY, HEBE (HE-BEE) WAS THE GODDESS OF YOUTH. SHE WAS A MOST BEAUTIFUL GODDESS; HER NAME MEANS "YOUTH" AND "PRIME OF LIFE"; HENCE, HER TITLE. HEBE IS THE YOUNGEST DAUGHTER OF TWO OLYMPIANS--ZEUS AND HERA. SHE IS THE SISTER OF ARES, THE GOD OF WAR, AND OF EILEITHYIA, THE GODDESS OF CHILDBIRTH. HEBE SERVED AS CUPBEARER TO THE GODS OF MOUNT OLYMPUS UNTIL SHE MARRIED HARACLES AFTER HIS MOST UNFORTUNATE MORTAL LIFE WAS ENDED. THE FOLLOWING SCENE FROM HOMER'S ILIAD DEPICTS HEBE PERFORMING HER DUTIES:

"THE GODS WERE SEATED NEAR TO ZEUS IN COUNCIL, "UPON THE GOLDEN FLOOR. GRACIOUSLY HEBE "SERVED THEM NECTAR, AS WITH CUPS OF GOLD"THEY TOASTED ONE ANOTHER, LOOKING DOWN"TOWARD THE STRONGHOLD OF ILION"."-- ILIAD; BOOK IV 1-5"

AFTER HERACLES DIED HE ASCENDED TO MOUNT OLYMPUS WHERE HE WAS WEDDED TO HEBE AS A REWARD FOR THE LONG-SUFFERING HERO AND THE KIND-HEARTED GODDESS. THIS RECONCILED HIM WITH HER MOTHER, HERA, WHO HAD LONG BEEN AGAINST THE MIGHTY WARRIOR.

"AND MIGHTY HERACLES, THE VALIANT SON OF NEAT-ANKLED ALCMENA, WHEN HE HAD FINISHED UP HIS GRIEVIOUS TOILS, MADE HEBE, THE CHILD OF THE GREAT ZEUS AND GOLD SHOD HERA HIS SHY WIFE IN SNOWY OLYMPUS. HAPPY HE! FOR HE HAS FINISHED HIS GREAT WORK AND LIVES AMONGST THE UNDYING GODS, UNTROUBLED AND UNAGING ALL HIS DAYS."HESIOD, THEOGONY, 950"

HEBE HAD OTHER ROLES AS WELL. SHE WAS THE PATRON GODDESS OF THE YOUNG BRIDE, AND AN ATTENDANT OF THE GODDESS, APHRODITE. SHE ALSO SERVED TO ASSIST HER MOTHR, HERA, BY PREPARING THE GREAT GODDESSES' CHARIOT.

"ON MOUNT OLYMPUS, HEBE MADE HERA'S CHARIOT READY."--THE ILIAD, 05.722"

"ON MOUNT OLYMPUS, HEBE ATTACHES THE YOKE OF HERA'S CHARIOT."--THE ILIAD, 05.730"

AND, WHEN HER BROTHER, ARES, WAS WOUNDED ON THE BATTLEFIELD OF TROY, IT WAS HEBE WHO COMFORTED HIM.

"HEBE WASHES AND DRESSES HIM AFTER HE HAD BEEN HEALED OF "THE WOUNDS "INFLICTED BY ATHENA."--THE ILIAD, 05.905"

HEBE PROTECTS AND DISTILLS THE GOLDEN APPLES OF THE HESPERIDES, THE APPLES WHICH GRANT THE OLYMPIANS THEIR YOUTH AND IMMORTALITY. IN MORE RECENT TIMES, HER FIGURE IS A VERY POPULAR STATURE FOR USE IN GARDEN FOUNTAINS.

" CLYTEMNESTRA "IS THE MORTAL DAUGHTER OF THE SPARTAN KING, TYNDAREUS AND LEDA. SHE IS THE SISTER OF HELEN OF TROY. IT SEEMS THAT, BECAUSE HER FATHER HAD NEGLECTED A SACRIFICE FOR APHRODITE, THE GODDESS CURSED HIM, AND HIS DAUGHTERS....ALL THREE WOULD BECOME ADULTERESSES.

INITALLY, CLYTEMNESTRA WAS MARRIED TO TANTALUS, A MAN HER FATHER HAD BETROTHED HER TOO WHILE SHE WAS STILL A VIRGIN; BUT HE WAS AN OLD MAN AND WAS KILLED MY HER SECOND HUSBAND, AGAMEMNON SOON AFTER THE WEDDING. SHE LOVED HER NEW HUSBAND AND BORE HIM FOUR CHILDREN--IPHIGENIA, ELECTRA, CHRYSOTHEMIS, AND ORESTES. LEGEND HAS IT THAT AGAMEMNON, ON HIS WAY TO RETRIEVE HELEN, FOOLISHLY SACRIFICED HIS OWN DAUGHTER, IPHIGENIA TO THE GODS IN EXCHANGE FOR FAIR WINDS. AN ENRAGED CLYTEMNESTRA BEGAN TO PLOT HER REVENGE.

DURING AGANMEMNON'S TEN-YEAR ABSENCE, CLYTEMNESTRA TOOK A LOVER, AEGISTHUS, AND RULED IN HER HUSBANDS NAME. WHEN AGANMEMNON RETURNED, SHE PRETENDED TO WELCOME HIM BACK; AGANMEMNON LET HIS GUARD DOWN, AND WHEN HE DID, AEGISTHUS MURDERED HIM. AND THEN THE COUPLE WENT ON TO BUTCHER ALL OF HIS SUPPORTERS.

TOGETHER WITH AEGISTHUS, SHE RULED MYCENAE FOR ANOTHER TEN OR MORE YEARS...UNTIL ELECTRA, RABID FOR VENGEANCE AFTER THE DEATH OF HER FATHER, ARRANGED FOR ORESTES TO KILL THE PAIR. CLYMENESTRA LEFT BEHIND A TRAGIC EXAMPLE OF A WOMAN OF POWER WHO WAS VICTIMIZED BY THE MEN OF HER TIME...AND AS A RESULT, WOMEN THEN LOST THEIR POLITICAL POWER. MANY LOOK UPON HER AS EVIL, BUT THIS NOT TRUE; SHE WAS, IN FACT, A WOMAN OF POWER WHO TRIED TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST THE FORCES WORKING AGAINST HER AND FAILED. UNFORTUNATELY, HER DEATH ENDED ANY MATRIARCHAL COMPONENT TO GREEK SOCIETY; THUS, IT BECAME COMPLETELY PATRIARCHAL UNTIL THE ROMAN PERIOD.

Kubaba Mother Goddess

Posted by Stella Clark

Kubaba Mother Goddess Image
"KUBABA" IS AN ANCIENT GODDESS, A PART OF THE EARLIEST KNOWN CIVILIZATION IN THE WORLD. SHE IS DEPICTED AS A DIGNIFIED FIGURE WHO IS DRAPED IN A LONG ROBE. A MOTHER GODDESS, SHE WAS WORSHIPPED BY SEVERAL CULTURES FOR MORE THAN MILLENNIA. KUBABA IS A TRUE SURVIVOR FOR AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS, HER IMAGE HAS MANAGED TO SURVIVE THE TEST OF TIME. THE MONUMENT PICTURED, THOUGH THOUSANDS OF YEARS OLD, SURVIVES FAIRLY INTACT AND SHOWS THE KUBABA HOLDING A MIRROR AND A POMEGRANATE, BOTH SYMBOLS OF MAGIC AND FERTILITY.

KUBABAS HISTORY CAN BE TRACED BACK TO THE DAYS OF THE HURRIAN CULTURE OF NORTHEASTERN MESOPOTAMIA. SHE WAS THE TUTELARY GODDESS WHO PROTECTED THE ANCIENT SYRIAN CITY OF CARCHEMISH AND WAS REPRESENTED IN MUCH THE THE SAME FASHION AS THE MONUMENT., BUT THEN SHE WAS CALLED HEPAT. AND LATER, AFTER THE FALL OF THE HURRIANS, SHE WAS ADOPTED BY THE HITTITES WHO GAVE HER THE NAME KUBABA. THIS HAPPENED AROUND 1200 BC.

KUBABA IS ALSO THE NAME OF THE ONLY QUEEN IN THE SUMERIAN KING LIST, AND SOME BELIEVE THE NAME AND LEGEND OF KUBABA MAY ACTUALLY BE RELATED TO QUEEN KUBABA OF THE CITY-STATE KINGDOM OF KISH. SHE WAS NOT A QUEEN BY BIRTH OR MARRIAGE, AND HER CLIMB TO POWER WAS ACTUALLY QUITE UNCONVENTIONAL. SHE DIDNT COME FROM A ROYAL OR ARISTOCRATIC FAMILY; SHE WAS, IN FACT, A TAVERN OWNER BEFORE TAKING POWER. HER REIGN AS THE ONLY "KING "OF KISH WAS ONE OF PEACE AND PROSPERITY. SHRINES IN HER HONOR SPREAD THROUGHOUT MESOPOTAMIA.

HOWEVER, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE HISTORICAL KUBABA AND THE GODDESS IS NOT CONCLUSIVE. WHAT IS KNOWN IS THAT THE MOTHER GODDESS WAS FOUND IN LATER CULTURES UNDER DIFFERENT NAMES AND, EVENTUALLY, THE KINGDOM OF PHRYGIA IN CENTRAL ANATOLIA, NOW TURKEY, ADOPTED HER AS THEIR MOTHER GODDESS. SHE WAS KNOWN AS CYBEBE. LATER, THE GRECO-ROMAN CIVILIZATION ALSO ADOPTED HER, CALLING HER SEVERAL NAMES...INCLUDING ARTEMIS, PERASIA, AND EVENTUALLY CYBELE.

KUBABA ALSO REPRESENTS SOMETHING UNIQUE TO MESOPOTAMIAN CULTURE. SHE WAS WOMAN, AND AS A WOMAN, SHE WAS POWERFUL, AND THE KINGDOMS THAT EMERGED IN THIS AREA HAD PRAYED TO THE POWERFUL GODDESS, KUBABA. TODAY, STATUES AND OTHER RELICS THAT BEAR HER IMAGE OR NAME ARE BEING UNEARTHED. MOST OF WHAT ARE FOUND ARE EITHER DEDICATED TO THE REAL KUBABA, WHILE MANY OTHERS ARE REPRESENTATIONS OF THE GODDESS. SHE IS THE MOTHER GODDESS WHO HAS WITHSTOOD THE TESTS OF TIME, THE MOTHER GODDESS TO A LOT OF CHILDREN, THE MOTHER OF CIVILIZATION.

BRIGHID (pronounced BREED) is the Celtic Goddess of fire. She rules over many types of fire--the fire of the forge (as Goddess of smithcraft and metal working), the fire of the hearth (as Goddess of healing), and the fire of creativity (as Goddess of poetry). Brighid is seen as a triple Goddess, and she is associated with three different spheres--high (leaping flames, tall forts, wisdom), middle (hearth and home), and low (wells and sacred springs).

Brighid's festival of Imbolc (pronounced IM-molk), celebrated on February 2, is the start of the agricultural year. This is the time when the Goddess in her aspect of Cailleach the Crone drinks from the Well of Youth and is transformed once again into the maiden, Brighid. Imbolc is also known as Candlemas or Saint Brigid's Day, since Brighid was adopted by the Christians who came to the British Isles.

Variations on Brighid's name, which means "exalted one," include BRID, BRIDE, BRIGHDE, BRIGID, BRIGINDO, BRIGANDU, BRIGAN, BRIGANTIA, and BRIGANTIS, and she is also known as:

ABARBAREE (pronounced a-ber-BAR-ee-ee) is one of the Greek Naiades. The Naiades were generally thought to be daughters of an Okeanid mother (the 3000 daughters of Tethys and Okeanos, Goddesses of fresh water sources) and a Potamoi father (the 3000 sons of Tethys and Okeanos, Gods of the rivers). Naiades were particularly responsible for water that came up from the earth, such as springs, fountains, and wells. Abarbaree watched over the River Aisepos in Anatolia. With the Trojan Prince Boukolion, she bore two sons, Aisepos and Pedasos. Abarbaree's name, which means "non-barbaric," is also seen as ABARBAREA.

SHE IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SEA...WHICH MOST BALINESE FEAR. SHE POSSESSES RIGHTEOUS PEOPLE AND DRIVES THEM TO SINFUL BEHAVIOR. SHE IS THE MODEL OF UNTAMED FERTILITY THAT CAN BECOME DANGEROUS.

SHE IS THE PERSONIFICATION OF EVIL WHO POSSESSES RIGHTEOUS PEOPLE AND DRIVES THEM TO SINFUL BEHAVIOR. ALTHOUGH SHE IS CONSTANTLY DEFEATED BY THE FORCES OF GOOD. RANGDA ALWAYS TURNS TO BATTLE AGAIN. SHE IS CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE INDIAN GODDESS, "DURGA", AND MAY ALSO BE LINKED TO KALI, THE DARK MOTHER OF DESTRUCTION, TRANSFORMATION, AND PROTECTION IN HINDUISM.

YET, WHILE MANY MAY SEE HER AS FEARSOME, IF TREATED WELL, SHE IS ACTUALLY TO BE CONSIDERED A PROTECTIVE FORCE IN SOME PARTS OF BALI, AND IN THIS FORM, SHE IS SOMETIMES DESCRIBED AS BEAUTIFUL. HER COLORS ARE BLACK, WHITE, AND READ. THE BALINESE PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT BY INCLUDING "RANGDA" IN RITUAL DRAMAS, THEY HOLD THE DANGERS OF CHAOS IN CHECK.

HER NAME MEANS "ROBBERY", AND SHE COULD OFTEN BE FOUND LURKING ON THE DANGEROUS CLIFFS AND, WITH THE HELP OF HER DAUGHTERS, ENTICING MARINERS TO APPROACH; ONCE WITHIN HER REACH, SHE SPREAD HER FISHING NET OVER THEM AND CALMLY DRAWS THEM DOWN INTO HER REALM.

Medea Goddess Or Not

Medea Goddess Or Not Image
"OF ALL THINGS UPON THE EARTH THAT BLEED AND GOW, A HERB MOST BRUISED IS WOMAN"--EURIPIDES

"MEDEA" IS A PRINCESS, A HEALER, AND A WITCH, ONE OF THE GREAT SORCERESSES OF THE ANCIENT WORLD; SHE WAS A PRINCESS OF COLCHIS, A KINGDOM THAT IS LOCATED ON THE EASTERN SHORE OF THE BLACK SEA. HER ANCESTORS WERE LINKED TO BOTH THE SUN AND HEALING...LONG BEFORE APOLLO BECAME THE GOD ASSOCIATED WITH THESE REALMS. HER GRANDFATHER WAS HELIOS, THE SUN GOD OF THE OLD ORDER; HER AUNT, CIRCE WAS A SORCERESS, MAGICIAN, AND HERBALSIT WHO TRAINED MEDEA IN THESE ARTS. SOME SAY SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF HECATE FOR SHE SERVED THIS GODDESS AS A PRIESTESS, HONORING HER ON THE DARK NIGHT. MEDEA KNEW OF THE LUNAR CYCLE AND HOW TO DRAW DOWN THE MOON WHEN RITUAL AND CEREMONY WERE NEEDED.

MEDEA HAD A DATE WITH DESTINY WHEN THE ARGONAUTS, IN SEARCH OF THE GOLDEN FLEECE, CAME ASHORE, FOR IT WAS THEN THAT SHE MET AND FELL IN LOVE WITH THE GREEK HERO, JASON. JASON WAS ENAMOURED WITH MEDEA'S POWERS AND PROMISED TO TAKE HER TO HELLAS AND MARRY HER IF ONLY SHE WOULD HELP HIM IN ACHIEVING HIS IMPOSSIBLE GOAL. SO, WITH THE HELP OF SPECIAL OINTMENTS, INCANTATIONS, AND TIMING, MEDEA ENABLED JASON TO SUCCEED AT THE TRIALS WHICH HAD BEEN SET BEFORE HIM...BUT IN HELPING HIM, SHE HAD TO BETRAY HER OWN FAMILY AND FLEE HER HOMELAND.

EVENTUALLY, MEDEA AND JASON SETTLE IN CORINTH WHERE THEY LIVED HAPPILY FOR ABOUT TEN YEARS; THEY HAD TWO CHILDREN TOGETHER, BUT JASON WAS GROWING WEARY OF HIS WIFE AND WANTED SOMEONE YOUNGER; THUS, HE CHOSE AS A BRIDE, THE DAUGHTER OF THE KING OF CORINTH. MEDEA IS TOLD THAT SHE MUST LEAVE THE COUNTRY IMMEDIATELY, BUT SHE PLEADS FOR MORE TIME, BUT IS ONLY GIVEN A ONE DAY REPRIEVE. DURING THAT TIME, SHE REMINDS JASON OF ALL THAT SHE HAS DONE FOR HIM, BUT JASON TURNS A DEAF EAR ON HER PLEA, TELLING HER THAT SHE NEED NOT WORRY, HIS FRIENDS WILL TAKE CARE OF HER. MEDEA, HUMILIATED AND BETRAYED, PREVENTED THE MARRIAGE BY KILLING BOTH THE PRINCESS AND THE KING.

AT THIS TIME, AEGES, KING OF ATHENS, ARRIVES AND OFFERS MEDEA SANCTUARY. NOW THAT SHE IS GUARANTEED A PLACE TO GO, SHE SETS FORTH TO COMPLETING HER REVENGE...WHICH INCLUDES THE MURDER OF HER OWN CHILDREN. SHE IS SO CONSUMED WITH RAGE THAT, EVEN THOUGH SHE WILL BE HURT HERSELF, AT THE DEATH OF HER CHILDREN,IT DOES NOT OUTWEIGH THE SATISFACTION SHE WILL FEEL IN MAKING JASON SUFFER. AFTER SHE COMPLETES HER DASTARDLY ACT, MEDEA FLEES THE SCENE IN A DRAGON PULLED CHARIOT WHICH HAS BEEN PROVIDED BY HER GRANDFATHER, HELIOS.

THIS TRAGEDY CONFRONTS OUR HUMAN EXPERIENCE OF RAGE, BETRAYAL, AND THE PAIN OF A BROKEN HEART. ALTHOUGH WE MIGHT NEVER THINK OF DOING THE UNSPEAKABLE, WE CAN RECOGINZE THE MOTIF AND THE PATTERN INHERENT IN THIS TALE.

Roman Goddess Fortuna

Roman Goddess Fortuna Image
FORTUNA IS THE ROMAN GODDESS OF FORTUNE AND LUCK--BOTH GOOD OR BAD. HER NAME MEANS "SHE WHO BRINGS". SHE IS SAID TO BE A GODDESS EVEN OLDER THAT THE GREEK DEITIES, HER HOME WAS SAID TO BE ON AN ISLAND WHERE SHE LIVED IN A GREAT CASTLE...MAJESTIC ON ONE SIDE AND LYING IN RUINS ON THE OTHER. HER STATUE COULD ALWAYS BE FOUND IN THE BEDCHAMBER OF THE ROMAN EMPORERS; IT WAS SAID THAT ANYONE WHO HAD EXPERIENCED A STREAK OF LUCK 'HAD A FORTUNA".

THERE IS A TALE ABOUT JULIUS CAESAR, WHO, WHILE ON THE HIGH SEAS IN A BOAT BEING TOSSED ABOUT IN A GREAT STORM, REPORTEDLY TOLD THE PILOT THAT HE SHOULD NOT WORRY, THAT THE SHIP CARRIED CAESAR'S FORTUNA. IN FACT, FORTUNA WAS REVERED BY THE SAILORS WHO PRAYED TO HER FOR HER AID IN AVOIDING STORMS, RETURNING ALIVE, AND HAVING PROFITABLE COMMERCE FROM THEIR JOURNEY. HENCE, SHE WAS ALSO HAILED AS A WEATHER GODDESS, FORTUNA COULD BRING SUNNY SKIES OR THROW THUNDERBOLTS. ONE OF HER SYMBOLS IS A SHIP'S RUDDER WHICH SUGGESTED KEEPING TO THE PATH. THE OTHER WAS A CORNUCOPIA. SHE WAS A BRINGER OF STORMS WHO WAS OFTEN SEE WHIRLING IN MIDAIR OR SPINNING IN THE CENTER OF HER GREAT WHEEL. IT IS SAID THAT SHE COULD EASILY BRING A MAN UP WITH ONE HAND AND TOSS HIM DOWN WITH THE OTHER.

SOME SAY SHE MAY HAVE BEEN THE QUEEN OF THE WORLD AT ONE TIME, BUT SHE WAS NEVER A LADY. SADLY, IN PATRIARCHAL TIMES, ONE OF THE MOST COMMON WAYS FOR HER TO BE PORTRAYED IN WAS THAT OF A WHORE. THIS WAS PARTLY TO SYMBOLIZE THE CARICIOUS WAYS SHE GAVE OUT HER FAVORS AND PARTLY BECAUSE THE WHORE WAS THE LOWEST WOMAN IN SOCIETY AT THAT TIME. ELABORATE RITUALS WERE SET UP BY HER PETITIONERS...WITH FOUR MEN REPRESENTING HER WHEEL...AND FORTUNA HERSELF WAS ALWAYS PLAYED BY A SEX WORKER OR A WOMAN 'OF LOOSE MORALS'.

"ROMANS OFTEN ASKED FORTUNA ABOUT THEIR FATE AND DIFFICULT PROBLEMS...AND TRADITIONALLY THEIR ANSWERS CAME ON SLIPS OF PAPER...OFTEN BAKED IN BREAD BALLS SIMILAR TO TODAY'S FORTUNE COOKIE. NEXT TIME YOU PLAN A PARTY, PLAN TO MAKE SOME HOMEMADE FORTUNE COOKIES AND THEN HAVE SOME FUN WITH YOUR GUESTS AS EACH TAKES THEIR TURN REACHING INTO THE BOWL TO SEE WHAT FORTUNA HAS TO SAY."

Goddess Ereshkigal

Goddess Ereshkigal Image
ERESHKIGAL (pronounced ay-RESH-kee-gal) is the Sumerian Goddess of death and Queen of the Underworld. She is the daughter of Nammu, Goddess of the primordial sea, and Anu, God of the sky, and twin sister of Enki, God of the waters. Shortly after her birth, she was carried off by the dragon Kur to the Underworld, where she became its ruler. She is also said to be the older sister of Inanna, Goddess of love, war, and fertility, and she is mostly known from the myth of Inanna's descent to the Underworld. Ereshkigal's husband Gugalanna, the Bull of Heaven, had been killed after Inanna sent him to punish Gilgamesh, and Inanna went to the Underworld to pay her respects to her sister. Ereshkigal feared that Inanna was actually coming to take over the Underworld, and had her servant remove an article of Inanna's clothing at each of the seven gates that she had to pass through. When she finally arrives naked at the foot of Ereshkigal's throne, Ereshkigal strikes her sister dead and hangs her body from a hook behind her throne.

Another myth of Ereshkigal tells of how she came to have a second husband, Nergal, God of war and plague. Nergal was first sent to the Underworld with a message from the other Gods to Ereshkigal. He was so impressed that he petitioned the Gods to let him visit a second time, and the great God Anu warned him not to eat or drink anything in the Underworld and not to get too close to Ereshkigal. However, Ereshkigal seduced Nergal and they stayed in bed for seven days. Nergal then left the Underworld and returned to the heavens. Heartbroken Ereshkigal threatened to raise the dead until they outnumbered the living if the other Gods would not send Nergal back, and he returned to the Underworld and married her.

Ereshkigal's name, which means "lady of the great earth," is seen as EREC-KIGALA, and she was also known as IRKALLA, which is another name for the Sumerian Underworld.
