ADEPHAGIA (pronounced a-dih-FAY-jee-uh) is the Greek Goddess of gluttony. She had a temple in Sicily, and the presence there of a statue of Demeter Sitos, Goddess of corn, implies that she was regarded as a Goddess of bountiful harvests rather than of excessive eating. Adephagia's name means "gluttony."

Goddess Egeria Image
"EGERIA" IS A ROMAN GODDESS OF SPRINGS AND LAKES. OAK TREES WERE ALSO CONSIDERED SACRED TO HER. SHE AS A DEITY PROTECTED PREGNANT WOMEN AND HELP THEM TO BRING THEIR BABIES SAFELY INTO THE WORLD. SHE WAS ALSO SAID TO HAVE THE GIFT OF PROPHECY AND FORETOLD OF EACH BABE'S FUTURE. SHE WAS LATER CONSIDERED BY THE ROMANS TO BE ONE OF THE "WATER NYMPHS" CALLED THE "CAMENAE".

THE DOMINANT MYTH SURROUNDING HER SAYS THAT SHE WAS AN ADVISER TO "NUMA POMPILIUS," THE SECOND RULER OF ROME, WHO BELIEVED HER TO BE INSPIRED BY "J"UPITER "WITH GREATNESS, BY "MINERVA" WITH WISDOM, BY "JUNO" WITH HER LOVE FOR NATURE, AND BY "VENUS "WITH BEAUTY. IT WAS SAID THAT, AT A CERTAIN HOUR IN THE EVENING, HE WENT ALONE TO THE GROTTO WHICH WAS THE FAVORITE RETREAT OF

"EGERIA," WHO THERE AWAITED HIS COMING. THERE SHE TAUGHT HIM THE EARTH WORSHIPING RITES. IT IS SAID THAT SHEPHERDS PASSED BY THAT WAY WITH THEIR FLOCKS HEARD THE SWEET TONES OF HER VOICE, AND AS THEY DARED TO LOOK, THEY SAW THEIR GOOD "KING NUMA" SITTING AT THE ENTRANCE NEAR THE EDGE OF THE FOUNTAIN, GAZING UP INTO THE DIVINE FACE OF "EGERIA"; AND AS HE CAUGHT THE WORDS OF WISDOM WHICH FELL FROM HER LIPS, HE TRANSCRIBED THEM ON SHEETS OF PARCHMENT.

THESE WRITINGS CAME TO BE CALLED THE "SACRED BOOKS. "AND WHEN "NUMA "DIED, HE ORDERED THOSE TWELVE BOOKS TO BE PLACED IN A STONE COFFIN BY THEMSELVES, AND BURIED SIDE BY SIDE WITH HIS OWN BODY, WHICH HE FORBADE TO BE BURNED AS WAS THEN THE CUSTOM. AND AFTER HE DIED, IT IS SAID THAT "EGERIA "GRIEVED SO MUCH FOR HER LOVE THAT THE GODDESS, "DIANA", TOOK PITY ON HER AND TURNED HER INTO A SPRING THAT WAS IMPORTANT TO HER.

FIVE HUNDRED YEARS LATER, AND ONE HUNDRED BEFORE THE BIRTH OF CHRIST, A HEAVY RAINFALL WASHED AWAY THE EARTH WHICH COVERED THE COFFINS, AND THE VOLUMES WERE DISCOVERED. ONE OF THE COFFINS WAS FOUND EMPTY, BUT IN THE OTHER WERE THE VOLUMES INSPIRED BY "EGERIA". ALL OF THESE BOOKS WERE ORDERED BY THE SENATE "TO BE BURNED! "THE REASON FOR THIS WAS THAT, AT THE TIME, THE ROMANS HAD INTRODUCED INTO THEIR RELIGION MANY SUPERSTITIOUS AND FOOLISH OBSERVANCES, WHICH FOUND NO COUNTERPART IN THOSE BOOKS OF WISDOMTHEREFORE THEY WISHED THEM TO BE DESTROYED. AND SO THEY BURNED THEM AND "EGERIA'S" WISDOM WAS LOST FOREVER.
