Goddess Baubo Image
"BAUBO" IS THE PRE-HELLENIC GODDESS OF LAUGHTER. SHE WAS THE SISTER OR MOTHER OF "IAMBE, "AND IT APPEARS THE GREEKS BORROWED HER FROM FAR OLDER CULTURES. OLD, SEXUALLY BAWDY, AND COMICALLY LEWD, SHE HAS BEEN CALLED A BELLY "GODDESS" OF OBSCENITY. SHE HAD A REPUTATION FOR TELLING INDECENT JOKES. SHE IS DEPICTED WITHOUT A HEAD OR LIMBS. HER BREASTS APPEAR AS EYES AND HER GENITALS ARE SHAPED LIKED A BEARDED MOUTH.

Baubo is perhaps most famous for an incident at Eleusis when the grief-stricken "Demeter" visited while searching for her daughter, "Persephone". REALIZING THAT THE "GODDESS" NEEDED NOURISHMENT, "BAUBO" OFFERED HER SOME SOUP, AND WHEN "DEMETER "REFUSED, "BAUBO" FLASHED HER VULVA IN AN ATTEMPT TO CHEER THE GODDESS UP. "DEMETER "BEGAN TO SMILE, AND THEN CHUCKLED, AND THEN GAVE A FULL BELLY LAUGH, AT WHICH POINT THE EARTH STARTED TURNING GREEN AGAIN. HENCE, IT IS EASY TO SEE THAT "BAUBO "REPRESENTS THE HEALING POWER OF LAUGHTER.

"WITH THESE WORDS SHE AT THE SAME TIME DREW UP HER GARMENTS FROM "

"THE LOWEST [HEM], "

"AND EXPOSED TO VIEW FORMATAS INGUINIBUS RES, "

"WHICH BAUBO GRASPING WITH HOLLOW HAND, FOR "

"THEIR APPEARANCE WAS INFANTILE, STRIKES, TOUCHES GENTLY. "

"THEN THE GODDESS, FIXING HER ORBS OF AUGUST LIGHT, "

"BEING SOFTENED, LAYS ASIDE FOR A LITTLE THE SADNESS OF HER MIND: "

"THEREAFTER SHE TAKES THE CUP IN HER HAND, AND LAUGHING, "

"DRINKS OFF THE WHOLE DRAUGHT OF CYCEON WITH GLADNESS."

THE DIFFERENT STORIES CONCERNING THE RECEPTION OF "DEMETER "AT ELEUSIS SEEM ALL TO BE INVENTIONS OF LATER TIMES, COINED FOR THE PURPOSE OF GIVING A MYTHICAL ORIGIN TO THE JOKES IN WHICH THE WOMEN USED TO INDULGE AT THE FESTIVAL OF THIS GODDESS.

Lord Matsya Cover
Lord Vishnu incarnates as Lord Matsya,at the end of each manvantara.

Once upon a time there was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu,King Satyavrata. He is a very great and vigorous devotee of Lord Vishnu. He used to perform all the vedic rituals and customs, and has done tapas.Once during his sandyavandanam, when he was at the river,a fish was into the hand of King Satyavrata. The fish was asking the king to save it from the larger fishes which r in the river. So the king took it in his kamandala, when he returned to his kingdom, the fish enlarged itself, asking the king to provide a more spacious one.So it began enlarging itself as big as an ocean,so the king has recognised that itself is the very great Lord, and prayed. So the Lord Matsya, has saved King Satyavrata for his great devotion from the flood which is going to destroy whole universe.King Satyavrata protected the seeds of all creatures on a boat for the next age,on the boat from the flood.

Lord Matsya, at a manvantara has saved vedas from a Demon and restored vedas to Lord Brahma.

Goddess Nzambi

Goddess Nzambi Image
"NZAMBI" IS THE EARTH MOTHER GODDESS WHO IS FOUND IN ALMOST EVERY CULTURE AMONG THE PEOPLE OF THE CONGO. IT WAS SHE WHO MADE THE EARTH AND SKY. SHE, WHO IS BOTH MALE AND FEMALE IN ONE. NZAMBI IS THE GIVER OF BOTH GREAT GENEROSITY AND OF PUNISHING FAMINE... DEPENDING ON WHETHER OR NOT SHE FEELS SOMEONE IS WORTHY. IT IS SAID THAT ONE OF HER FAVORITE TRICKS IS TO TAKE ON THE GUISE OF AN OLD BEGGAR WOMAN AND GO FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE, BEGGING FOR SOMETHING TO EAT. THOSE WHO GIVE HER THEIR SCRAPS ARE SAID TO RECEIVE A ONLY A SMALL TOKEN OF MONEY IN THE NEAR FUTURE, WHILE THOSE WHO BRING HER INSIDE AND PROVIDE HER A MEAL BY THE FIRE, ARE REWARDED WITH GREAT WEALTH. AND, THOSE WHO CHOOSE TO TURN HER AWAY ARE SENT NOTHING BUT FAMINE AND POVERTY; SHE TAKES AWAY WHAT THEY REFUSED TO SHARE.

NZAMBI'S LESSONS EMPHASIZE THE RULE OF HOSPITALITY, OF EXTENDING THE RESOURCES OF THE FAMILY CIRCLE UNTIL THE WORLD OUTSIDE. THE GIVER MUST NOT HAVE A SECRET AGENDA OR OBLIGATION, AND THE RECIPIENT MUST ACCEPT THE GIFT QUIETLY, WITHOUT CRITICISM OR OVERT SHOW. IN ONE OF HER LEGENDS, SHE IS APPROACHED BY A CRAB. HE HAS NO LIMBS AND ASKS HER FOR LEGS. SHE GRANTS HIM A PAIR, BUT HE WANTS ANOTHER...AND ANOTHER. FINALLY, AFTER HE SPORTS MORE LEGS THAN MOST OTHER CREATURES, HE ASKS FOR A HEAD AS WELL. NZAMBI AGREES, BUT SAYS THAT HE WILL RECEIVE HIS HEAD IN A FEW DAYS.

THE CRAB INVITES EVERYONE TO BE PRESENT AT THE RECEIVING OF HIS HEAD...WHICH HE HAS TURNED INTO A HUGE CEREMONY. WHEN NZAMBI ARRIVES, SHE FINDS HIM STRUTTING ARROGANTLY, MOVING SIDEWAYS INSTEAD OF FORWARDS SO AS TO SHOW OFF ALL OF HIS EXTRA LEGS. SHE BECOMES SO DISGUSTED WITH HIS ARROGANCE AND PRIDE, THAT SHE INFORMS HIM THAT SHE WILL NOT BE GIVING HIM A HEAD AFTER ALL; INSTEAD, SHE SENTENCES HIM TO SCUTTLE SIDEWAYS FOREVER. CRAB IS SO HUMILIATED THAT HE HIDES UNDER A ROCK...WHICH HAS WHAT HE HAS DONE EVER SINCE.

NZAMBI'S LESSON IS MORE THAN ONE OF DISAPPROVAL OF PRIDE; SHE IS ANGRY THAT CRAB HAS FLOUTED THE GREATEST TENET OF THE GIVER-RECIPIENT RELATIONSHIP...THE LION'S SHARE OF THE ATTENTION MUST GO TO THE GIVER.

Maya Death Gods

Posted by Stella Clark

Maya Death Gods Cover
The Maya Death Gods, known under various names, belong to only two basic types, respectively represented by the 16th-century Yucatec deities Hunhau and Uacmitun Ahau mentioned by Landa. Hunhau is the lord of the Underworld. Iconographically, Hunhau and Uacmitun Ahau correspond to the Gods A and A'. In recent narratives, particularly in the oral tradition of the Lacandons, there is only one death god (called Kisin in Lacandon), who acts as the antipode of the Upper God in the creation of the world and of the human body and soul. This death god inhabits an Underworld that is also the world of the dead. As a ruler over the world of the dead, the principal death god corresponds to the Aztec deity Mictlantecuhtli. The Popol Vuh has two leading death gods, but these two are really one: Both are called 'Death', with only the prefixes ('One' and 'Seven') being different. They were vanquished by the Hero Twins. The two principal death gods count among the many were-animals and spooks inhabiting the Underworld, with the God A way in particular manifesting himself as a head hunter and a deer hunter.

AND SO IT WAS THAT WHEN THE AZTECS TRAVELED TOWARDS THE SOUTH FROM THEIR HOMELAND OF AZTLAN, UNSURE WHERE THEY WOULD BUILD THEIR CITY, A WOMAN TRAVELED AMONG THEM CALLED "MALINALXOCHITL".

SHE WAS SAID TO BE VERY BEAUTIFUL...BOTH IN FORM AND MANNER BUT THERE WAS AN EVIL SIDE TO HER. SHE COULD DRIVE MEN MAD, SHAKE A RIVER FROM ITS COURSE, OR STRIKE HER ENEMIES DEAD JUST BY LOOKING AT THEM. OR SOMETIMES SHE WOULD TWIST A SOMEONE'S VISION SO THAT THE PERSON THOUGHT THEY WERE SEEING A HUGE BEAST OR SOME HORRIBLE MONSTER. FOR A TIME SHE RULED THEM ON THEIR WANDERINGS, HER FLESH AND BLOOD GUIDANCE COMPLEMENTING UNSEEN "HUITZILOPOCHTLIS "DIRECTIONS IN DREAMS AND HER MAGIC A FORMIDABLE FORCE ADDED TO HIS STRENGTH.

SOMETIMES, DURING THE DARKNESS, WHEN THE PEOPLE WERE ASLEEP, SHE WOULD TAKE A MAN OUTSIDE OF THE CAMP AND TOSS HIM IN FRONT OF A POISONOUS SNAKE. AND BECAUSE SHE WAS A WITCH, SHE COULD TRANSFORM HERSELF INTO ANY BIRD OR ANIMAL SHE WISHED. WITH ALL THESE DANGEROUS POWERS, SHE WANTED TO BE TREATED LIKE A GODDESS, AND NOTHING LESS WOULD DO. THE AZTECS ALLOWED HER TO LIVE AMONG THEM BECAUSE SHE WAS THE SISTER OF THE GOD OF WAR, H"UITZILOPOCHTLI", BUT EVENTUALLY, THE PRIESTS COMPLAINED. THE AZTECS HAD GROWN TO RESENT THEIR FEMALE RULER..."

"..."MY SISTER IS A GRAVE THREAT TO YOU. YOU SHOULD END ALL RELATIONSHIPS WITH HER AND HER WITCHCRAFT. TOMORROW NIGHT, WHEN SLEEP FIRST COMES TO HER, YOU SHOULD MOVE QUICKLY AND SILENTLY, LEAVING HERBEHIND. MY DESTINY IS TO GOVERN NOT BY WITCHCRAFT BUT BY THE STRENGTH OF THE ARROW AND THE SHIELD, OF THE CHEST AND SHOULDERS."

"MY COMMANDS WILL BE OBEYED IN ALL THE LANDS AND I WILL GUARD OVER YOU AND PROTECT THE PEOPLE SO THEY LIVE WELL, SO THE MEXICAN NATION FLOWERS ITS NAME RISING TO THE HEAVENS. OUR CONQUEST WILL BRING TO US JADE, GOLD AND FEATHERS OF ALL COLORS WHICH WILL BE USED TO DECORATE MY TEMPLE. IT WILL ALSO BRING US CORN AND CHOCOLATE OF DIFFERENT TYPES, AND COTTON OF DIFFERENT COLORS. I WILL HAVE EVERYTHING.

"HUITZILOPOCHTLI" ORDERED THE PEOPLE TO LEAVE, AND HE PUT HIS SISTER TO SLEEP. ACCORDING TO AZTEC, MYTH, THE CAPITAL CITY OF "TENOCHTITLAN" WAS FOUNDED ON THE BURIED HEART OF "COPIL, MALINALXOCHITL'S "SON. COPIL," KILLED BY THE MEXICANS ON ORDERS FROM "HUITZILOPOCHTLI", WAS SYMBOLICALLY, IF NOT LITERALLY, THE FIRST VICTIM OF AZTEC HUMAN SACRIFICE; HIS HEART WAS THROWN INTO THE MIDDLE OF LAKE TEXCOCO.

Goddess Atai Image
ATAI is the Efik Goddess of creation and death. The Efik of Nigeria say that Atai and her husband Abassi, God of creation and the sky, created the first man and woman. Abassi wanted to keep them in the sky with him so that he could better control them, fearing that they would become stronger or wiser than him. Atai convinced him to let them settle on the earth, under the conditions that they would not work or mate. Abassi agreed, and the man and woman went to live on the earth. Each day, they returned to the heavens to eat with Abassi so he could check up on them.

Eventually, the woman discovered that she could grow food for her and the man by herself, and began to work in the fields. After the man had joined her in the field, they also discovered sex and began to have children. When Abassi called them to come and eat, they would not come and Abassi turned on Atai and blamed her for convincing him to let them go. Atai told Abassi that she would resolve the situation, and she sent death and discord to the earth. The first man and woman died immediately, and their children were doomed to have discord walk among them for all their days, until they too died.

Apedemak, alt Apademak, was a lion-headed warrior god worshiped in Nubia by Meroitic peoples. A number of Meroitic temples dedicated to Apedemak are known from the Butana region: Naqa, Meroe, and Musawwarat es-Sufra, which seems to be his chief cult place. In the temple of Naqa built by the rulers of Meroe he was depicted as a three-headed leonine god with four arms, but he is also depicted as a single-headed leonine deity. Apedemak played little role in Egyptian religion, being a product of the Meroitic culture.

Goddess Macha

Goddess Macha Image
MACHA (pronounced MOCK-uh) is the Irish goddess of war. Along with her sisters Badb and Anu, she forms the triple Goddess known as the Morrigan. All three could take the form of crows or ravens, and would fly over battlefields, choosing who would die and who would live. They would then take the souls of the deceased in their black wings, flying them off to the Otherworld.

Macha, Badb, and Anu are the daughters of Ernmas, an Irish mother Goddess, and Delbaeth, High King of Ireland. They are also the sisters of another triplicity of Goddesses: Banba, Eriu, and Fodla, Goddesses of Irish sovereignty. Where the latter three Goddesses embodied the sovereignty of Ireland, the former three protected it, through war but also through life. There are actually three Irish mythological figures named Macha, and only one is warlike: MACHA MONG RUADH (Macha of the red hair), who fought to become queen after her father the king had died. Another Macha, the wife of Nemed, who led the Nemedians into Ireland, died shortly after their arrival, but not before prophesying the arrival of the third Macha. This third Macha appeared one day at the home of a widowed farmer and became his wife, and he soon became very prosperous. When he wanted to attend the Assembly of Ulster, Macha did not want him to go, but relented on the condition that he not mention her name. Unfortunately, the farmer boasted to the King of Ulster that his wife was faster than the king's horses, and she was dragged to Ulster to race against the horses. Macha was heavily pregnant with twins at the time, but she still managed to beat the horses. After crossing the finish line, she went into labor, delivered the twins, and then died. As her dying words, she cursed the men of Ulster, saying that in the time of their greatest difficulty, they too would suffer the pains of labor and childbirth.

Macha's name, which means "plain" (as in flat land), resounds throughout Irish mythology and history. The first Macha, wife of Nemed, was buried at Ard Macha (hill of Macha), now known as Armagh. The place where the third Macha gave birth became the capital of Ulster, Emain Macha (Macha's twins). The hero Cuchulainn is given a horse by Anu named Liath Macha (gray of Macha).

Djinn

Posted by Stella Clark

Djinn Image
Djinn, a.k.a." Jinn, Genies", are in Middle Eastern folklore a race of supernatural beings that existed on the earth prior to the creation of humanity. Djinn are similar to the fairies of Europe and the demons of Judeo-Christianity.

APPEARANCE: The Djinn's true form is that of a being of fire. However, as the Djinn possess the powers of shape-shifting they can take on any form or shape they choose. The Djinn tend to prefer animal shapes.

LORE: According to Islamic belief, God created the Angels from light, the Djinn from fire, and Humans from earth. The Djinn, though different from humans, are also similar to humans in several ways. For one they have both male and female genders. Secondly, their society is structured similar to human society, with the Djinn having their own form of government. Also, the Djinn can be Muslim, Christian, or members of any other faith. Despite how the Djinn are often portrayed, not all Djinn are evil. In fact, the overwhelming majority of Djinn are apathetic or indifferent toward humanity. Only a small percentage of Djinn are openly malevolent or benevolent toward humanity. Djinn can inhabit out-of-the-way places and also appear to dwell in a parallel world, similar to the notion of "fairy land". Interestingly, it is just as difficult for the Djinn to perceive humanity as it is for humanity to perceive the Djinn. The Djinn can, and sometimes do, interbreed with humans.

THE DJINN AND SORCERY: Djinn are vulnerable to magic. Sorcerers or magicians can enslave Djinn and force them to do their bidding. One of the best examples of this behavior would be the enslavement of the Djinn by King Solomon. According to legend, King Solomon possessed a magic ring that allowed him to command the spirits. Solomon used the ring to order the Djinn to build the temple attributed to him. It is a common belief that black magic practitioners will send out a Djinn to harass, harm, or even kill a person.

DJINN AS "GENIES": The popular image of the "genie-in-a-bottle" is in fact a reference to a Djinn which has been trapped in a bottle, container, or gem or crystal via the use of magic or sorcery. Djinn can and do promise the granting of wishes to mortals in return fro releasing them. Unfortunately, many of the Djinn who were imprisoned in such containers tend to be of the evil and violent type of Djinn.

POWERS: Djinn possess the powers of invisibility and shape-shifting. The Djinn can also possess a person or object. Djinn are impervious to human weapons.

DEFENSE AGAINST DJINN: Djinn can be exorcised from a possessed person. Djinn are vulnerable to magic. The most common method of dispatching a Djinn is to magically trap a Djinn in a bottle or container. Once trapped the Djinn can no longer harm humans.

DJINN IN POPULAR CULTURE: Djinn make appearances in several books and movies. The classic "One Thousand And One Nights", is perhaps the most famous. Movies such as "Disney's Aladdin" and the "Wishmaster" series also feature Djinn. A Djinn also features prominently in "The X-Files" episode, "Je Souhaite."

Bellona Roman Goddess Of War Image
BELLONA WAS THE ANCIENT ROMAN GODDESS OF WAR..."THE LADY OF WAR". SHE IS THE FEMALE COUNTERPART OF MARS. IN FACT, BELLONA HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE ORIGINAL ROMAN WAR DEITY, PREDATING MARS BY SEVERAL YEARS. HER FAITH AS DESCRIBED AS BLOODY AND ORGIASTIC. SOME RESEARCHERS SAY THAT SHE WAS THE SISTER OF MARS, HIS DAUGHTER, OR HIS WIFE. HOWEVER, IT IS KNOWN THAT JUPITER AND JUNO ARE THE PARENTS OF MARS, AND BELLONA IS THOUGHT TO BE THE DAUGHTER OF PHOREY AND CETO. THUS, IT MAKES IT MORE PROBABLE THAT SHE WAS HIS WIFE. SHE IS DEPICTED AS A WOMAN ARMED WITH A SWORD, SPEAR, AND TORCH. THE DEADLY POISONOUS HERB 'BELLADONA' IS ASSOCIATED WITH BELLONA. SHE DID NOT PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN EITHER MYTH OR LEGEND, AND HER WORSHIP APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN BASICALLY PROMOTED IN ROME.

BELLONA HAD HER OWN TEMPLE IN EARLY ROME. IT STOOD IN THE CAMPUS MARTUS NEAR THE ALTAR OF MARS...JUST OUTSIDE OF THE GATES OF THE CITY. HERE IS WHERE THE ROMAN SENATE MET TO RECEIVE THE FOREIGN AMBASSADORS. AND, IN FRONT OF THE TEMPLE STOOD A COLUMN WHICH SERVED FOR MAKING DECLARATIONS OF WAR. HERE WAS WHERE THE PRIESTS WHO SUPERVISED THE RELIGIOUS ASPECT OF ROMAN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS PERFORMED THE CEREMONIES IN WHICH THEY OFFERED SACRIFICES TO HER. THEY HAD TO WOUND THEIR OWN ARMS OR LEGS...AND THEN THEY EITHER OFFERED UP THE BLOOD OR DRANK IT THEMSELVES IN ORDER TO BECOME INSPIRED WITH A WARLIKE ENTHUSIASM. (HER EARLIEST SACRIFICES WERE SAID TO BE HUMAN.)

THUS, THE MAIN OBJECT FOR WHICH BELLONA WAS WORSHIPPED WAS TO GRANT A WARLIKE SPIRIT AND ENTHUSIASM WHICH NO ENEMY COULD RESIST. SHE IS INVOKED FOR STRATEGY AND VICTORY. SHE WAS VERY WELL KNOWN AMONGST THE BATTLE SOLDIERS, AND SHE SERVED AS THE GREAT PROTECTRESS OF TERBUS AND HIS LEGIONS.

TODAY BELLONA STANDS GUARD OVER THE MILITARY AFFAIRS COMMITTEE OF THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS.

Goddess Laverna

Goddess Laverna Image
"(AVENTINE HILL; THE PORTA LAVERNALIS LOCATED HERE WAS NAMED FOR LAVERNA)"

"AMONG THE GODS OR SPIRITS WHO WERE OF ANCIENT TIMES--MAY THEY BE EVER FAVOURABLE TO US! AMONG THEM WAS ONE FEMALE WHO WAS THE CRAFTIEST AND MOST KNAVISH OF THEM ALL. SHE WAS CALLED LAVERNA. SHE WAS A THIEF, AND VERY LITTLE KNOWN TO THE OTHER DEITIES, WHO WERE HONEST AND DIGNIFIED, FOR SHE WAS RARELY IN HEAVEN OR IN THE COUNTRY OF THE FAIRIES."

"SHE WAS ALMOST ALWAYS ON EARTH, AMONG THIEVES, PICKPOCKETS AND PANDERS--SHE LIVED IN DARKNESS."--VIRGIL

LAVERNA IS THE ROMAN GODDESS OF THIEVES, PICKPOCKETS, SHOPKEEPERS, RASCALS, AND HYPOCRITES. SHE WAS ORIGINALLY AN UNDERWORLD GODDESS OF THE ETRUCIANS, BUT BECAME THE GODDESS OF THIEVES BECAUSE THIEVES OPERATE IN THE DARK OF NIGHT. THERE WAS A TEMPLE IN A SACRED GROVE WHICH WAS NAMED FOR HER, AND THIS IS WHERE THE ROBBERS WOULD COME TO DIVVY UP THEIR LOOT. NEARBY THERE WAS AN ALTAR. THERE WAS A STATUE OF THE GODDESS AND HER IMAGE WHICH, ACCORDING TO SOME WAS A HEAD WITHOUT A BODY; OTHERS SAY SHE WAS A BODY WITHOUT A HEAD.

LAVERNA WAS WORSHIPPED IN SILENCE AND WAS PROPITIATED WITH BY LIBATIONS POURED WITH THE LEFT HAND. IT IS SAID THAT LAVERNA HAD MANY LOVERS AND MANY CHILDREN, AND ALTHOUGH SHE OFTEN REPENTED HER LIFE OF SIN, SHE COULD NOT REFORM; HER PASSIONS WERE FAR TOO STRONG.

'Behold me, for I am Laverna, whoHave come to answer to that Lord's complaint,Who swears that I contracted debt to him,And have not paid although the time is o'er,And that I am a thief because I sworeUpon my head--but, as you all can see,I have no head at all, and therefore IAssuredly ne'er swore by such an oath.'

Egyptian Gods Faq

Egyptian Gods Faq Cover
* In Liber AL, there are some Egyptian names that look funny. What's the deal?

Crowley, it seems, tried as much as possible to use the original Egyptian pronunciations of divine names, rather than use their popular Greek corruptions. Some of these (e.g. Hadit) have since been revised in the light of better knowledge of Egyptian, but his attempt was in general a good one.

* Was there any Egyptian gematria?

Put simply, no. If there was a standard order used by the Egyptians for their alphabet, it has been lost. And unlike Hebrew, but like English, the symbols used to express numbers in Ancient Egyptian were not used for letters.

However, since the phonetics of Egyptian closely parallel Hebrew, it is possible to transliterate Egyptian names and phrases into the Hebrew alphabet for gematric computations much more readily than English.

* What's the deal with all these 'hyphenated' gods like Amen-Ra, Ra-Hoor-Khuit, Ptah-Seker-Ausar, etc.?

Most hyphenated gods' names are explained thusly:

In ancient Egypt, different cities often had completely different conceptions of cosmology. As the influence of a city grew, so often did the influence of its mythos. It became necessary to reconcile different gods who served similar roles, and so the priests took the enlightened viewpoint that the "gods" were merely one entity manifesting under different names and/or forms. The one entity was referred to by a compound name, such as Amen-Ra or Ptah-Seker-Ausar.

However, some hyphenated gods' names are merely hyphenated to make them easier to read, for example, Her-nedj-tef-f, from the Egyptian words Her "Horus", nedj "avenger", tef "father", and -f "his", thus "Horus, the avenger of his father."

In the case of Ra-Hoor-Khuit, we have both explanations in force: Ra "Ra", Hoor "Horus", khuit "of the horizons", thus "Ra, who is like Horus of the Horizons".
