"(THIS STATUE OF SERQET PROTECTS THE GREAT TUTANKHAMUN IN HIS SARCOPHAGUS)"

"SERQET (SELGUT, SERGUET) IS THE ANCIENT EGYPTIAN SCORPION GODDESS OF MAGIC. WE USUALLY FIND HER DEPICTED AS A TALL WOMAN WITH A SCORPION ON HER HEAD, BUT AT TIMES, SHE HAS ALSO BEEN KNOWN TO BE TWO-HEADED--AND APPEARS AS A LIONNESS WITH A CROCODILE WHICH PROJECTS FROM HER BACK. SERQET IS A PROTECTIVE GODDESS; SHE IS ONE WHO PUNISHED THE WRONGDOERS WITH A VENGEFUL WRATH. SHE RULES OVER ALL OF THE POISONOUS CREATURES...ESPECIALLY THE SCORPIONS, THE SPIDERS, AND THE VENOMOUS SNAKES, AND, BECAUSE THE BITES OF MANY OF THESE CREATURES COULD BE FATAL, SERQET WAS ALSO CONSIDERED A PROTECTRESS OF THE DEAD AND WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE MORTUARY RITES.

HOWEVER, HER PROTECTIVE QUALITIES DID NOT ONLY COVER LIFE, BUT ALSO DEATH AND THE AFTERLIFE AS WELL, AND SHE WAS REVERED FOR GIVING BOTH THE KISS OF DEATH AND THE BREATH OF REBIRTH. IN THE UNDERWORLD, SHE HELPED IN THE PROCESS OF THE REBIRTH OF THE NEWLY DECEASED AND ORIENTED THEM AS THEY CAME TO HER, GIVING THEM THE BREATH OF LIFE.

SOME SAY SHE WAS THE MOTHER OF THE SUN GOD, RA; OTHERS SAY SHE WAS HIS DAUGHTER AND JOINED HIM ON HIS NIGHTLY JOURNEYS TO THE UNDERWORLD. SHE IS BELIEVED TO BE THE TWIN SISTER OF NEPHTHYS AND A CLOSE FRIEND OF ISIS. SHE IS THE WIFE OF HORUS AND THE MOTHER OF NEHEBKAU, THE SNAKE GOD WHO PROTECT THE PHARAOH FROM SNAKEBITS. AND, ALONG WITH WITH NEITH, IT WAS SERQET WHO WATCHED THE SKY SO THAT NO ONE WOULD DISTURB AMON AND HIS WIFE; THUS, SHE BECAME THE PROTECTRESS OF THE MARRIAGE UNION. IT IS KNOWN THAT THERE WAS A PRIESTHOOD TO HER IN THE ANCIENT DAYS, BUT, ALAS, NONE OF HER SHRINES OR TEMPLES WERE LEFT STANDING, BUT WE DO HAVE THE FOLLOWING REMEMBRANCE OF THIS GREAT GODDESS.

"I AM SERQET, MISTRESS OF HEAVEN AND LADY OF ALL THE GODS. I HAVE COME BEFORE YOU, OH KING'S GREAT WIFE, MISTRESS OF THE TWO LANDS, LADY OF UPPER AND LOWER EGYPT, NEFERTARI, BELOVED OF MUT, JUSTIFIED BEFORE OSIRIS WHO RESIDES IN ABTU, AND I HAVE ACCORDED YOU A PLACE IN THE SACRED LAND, SO THAT YOU MAY APPEAR GLORIOUSLY IN HEAVEN LIKE RA."

"(INSCRIPTION IN THE TOMB OF NEFETARI) "

The Muses Image
THE MUSES OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY WERE THE DAUGHTERS OF ZEUS AND MNEMOSYNE (MEMORY). IT IS SAID THAT THEY LAY TOGETHER FOR NINE MONTHS, AND ONE YEAR LATER MNEMOSYNE GAVE BIRTH TO THE NINE DAUGHTERS. THESE NINE GREEK GODDESS OF ART AND INSPIRATION HAD A VERY IMPORTANT FUNCTION TO FULFILL--TO INSPIRE POETS AND TO PROMOTE THE ARTS AND SCIENCES. AREAS WHERE SACRED WELLS AND SPRINGS ARE FOUND ARE WHERE THE MUSES WERE MOST VENERATED.
